I Want to Get on Facebook: How Do I Use Facebook?
With 2.2 billion active monthly uses, Facebook is the most popular social network in the world.
People flock there seeking everything from a slice of entertainment to a sense of purpose and belonging. You may be thinking now “I want to get on Facebook too, but I’m not sure how to use this platform”.
Well, if that is the case, fret not.
It’s never too late the join the biggest digital party on the face of the earth. We’ve compiled a comprehensive guide with tips for using Facebook with ease.
Setting up the Account
Facebook is a rather user-friendly environment that involves a minimum learning curve.
Signing up is the first order of business. Visit the Facebook homepage or use the Facebook mobile app.
There, you have several fields to fill before you can log in:
- First name
- Last name
- Mobile number
Sort out and double-check all the details and select “Sign Up”. Doing that gets you through the gate, but there’s a caveat. You’re handing over personal information to one of the largest companies of today.
To remain in control of your data as much as possible, adjust your privacy settings.
These settings let you determine who can see your profile, photos, and other information.
So, find the downward pointing arrow on the top right corner of the page. Click on “Settings” and then “Privacy” in the left sidebar. Employ this option to designate groups or individuals that can see your posts.
It’s also possible to decide how you want others to be able to find and reach you out. There are no hard rules here. Your choices depend on your personal preferences and how much you value privacy.
Customizing the Profile
This is where all the fun begins.
Through personalization, you set yourself apart from the crowd and make it easier for others to connect with you. There are three mains features that let you do that:
- Profile picture
- Cover photo
- Personal information
To choose your profile picture, navigate to the circle on the left-hand side and click “Edit Profile Picture”. You can pick a photo you’re tagged in or upload one from your computer. Notice Facebook also enables you to set a frame for the picture.
Moving on, the cover photo dominates the top of the profile section. To upload it, select the camera icon in the top right corner. It opens a small menu with a handful of options, most of which are the same as when uploading a profile picture.
When it comes to personal information, it’s entirely optional. In case you do want to flesh out the profile in this way, go to the “About” section. There are a number of fields relating to your work, education, relationship status, contact info, etc.
News Feed: A Portal to Friends, Brands, and More
Once you’re all set up, there are many exciting avenues to explore.
News Feed is perhaps the busiest one of all. It’s a curated collection of posts from other people and pages you follow. In the beginning, there’s not much going on there.
But you can quickly change that.
Use the search bar in the top right corner, next to the Facebook logo. It’s the main pathway to connecting with people, brands, celebrities, publications, etc. Just type a friend’s or organization’s name and hit “Enter”.
There is also a “Friends” tab on your profile page, and it has the “Find Friends” button. Upon clicking it, you receive a list of people who sent your friend requests, as well as people you may know.
An alternative way to add friends would be to import a list of contacts from your mail or phone.
Friend requests, when accepted, add people to your friend list. On the other hand, to stay in tune with updates from pages, you need to like or follow them.
Interactions With Other Users
Interaction with others is something that plays out in different ways.
Both the “Home” and “Profile (your name)” sections have a box with the question “What’s on your mind”. It offers multiple ways to express yourself and engage with friends.
Namely, you can do it through:
- Photos and videos
- Tagging friends
- Checking in at locations
- Recording live video
- Uploading GIF files
- Sharing activities/feelings/Facebook stories
Most often though, users simply like posts (thumbs-up) or react with emojis, such as “Care”, “Wow”, “Love”, and “Sad”. Two other common interactions are sharing or commenting on someone’s post.
On top of that, Facebook provides a direct messaging (chat) tool. You can use it within Facebook websites or as a separate app, Facebook Messenger. In both cases, the features are very similar.
You can send messages, look for past conversations, and configure the settings. Finally, you may do free video, and phone (audio) calls.
A Limitless Playing Field
Your own activity is recorded and displayed on the Timeline.
Think of it as a log you can browse at any time, a log that works in reverse-chronological order. It contains your:
- Uploaded photos and videos
- Status updates
- Photos you’re tagged in
Note that you can also upload videos and profiles to their profiles. To do that, select the “Photos” tab and choose “Add photos/videos”. To set some order to content, utilize video and photo album option.
You can find it in the same “Photos” tab.
Feel free to download any photos you like, respective people’s privacy, and trademark rules. You can also download a video you like. Check out this link to find out how: https://setapp.com/how-to/download-facebook-video.
The list of opportunities goes on and includes groups, games, events, marketplace, etc. Feel free to explore further on your own.
